Comedian Gus Constantellis Brings Greek Food, Stand-Up and His New Cookbook to Kingston

Bluecashew Kitchen Homestead welcomes the viral “Greek Mom” creator for an evening of food, comedy, music and storytelling on Friday, September 11.

Food, family, grief and comedy come together in Uptown Kingston next Friday when Gus Constantellis heads to bluecashew Kitchen Homestead to celebrate his debut cookbook, My Greek Mom’s Recipes: She Died. I Wrote This Cookbook.

The free event takes place Friday, September 11 from 6–8pm at bluecashew on North Front Street, with Greek-inspired food and drinks, a stand-up performance, book signing and music from internationally renowned DJ Eli Goldstein of Soul Clap.

Constantellis, a Greek-American comedian, writer and content creator from Brooklyn, is known for his viral “Greek Mom” videos, which have attracted millions of views across TikTok, Instagram and YouTube. His new cookbook takes the character—and the very real family history behind it—somewhere much more personal.

Part cookbook, part memoir and part comedy, My Greek Mom’s Recipes grew out of Constantellis’ relationship with his late mother and the food he grew up eating in a loud, loving Greek-American household.

The book features more than 75 Greek recipes, from spanakopita, moussaka and keftedakia to loukoumades and baklava, woven together with stories about family, immigrant traditions, queerness, loss and the role humor can play in processing grief.

“My mom used to say, ‘When I die, you’re all going to starve,’” Constantellis recalls in the book. “Instead, she made sure we never would.”

For the bluecashew event, guests will actually get to taste some of those memories.

Starting at 6pm, the kitchen shop will serve Greek-inspired drinks and tastings featuring recipes from the cookbook. Constantellis takes the floor at 6:45pm for a short stand-up set, followed by a book signing and meet-and-greet.

There’s a local connection behind the book as well. It was styled by Andrea Lubrano and photographed by Sheneur Menaker, both friends of bluecashew, whose work helped translate Constantellis’ stories and recipes to the page.

“Among the many things food does—it nourishes, comforts, celebrates and brings people together—one of its greatest gifts is that it keeps the people we love close, even after they’re gone,” says bluecashew owner JT McKay.
